Myokoen, founded in 1916 (Taisho 5), is a tea selection, processing, and sales company headquartered in Atsuta-ku, Nagoya.
Their Origin: "Meicha Junshin" — Tea That Nourishes the Heart
In Nagoya, the practice of tea culture flourished under Tokugawa Munekatsu, the 7th feudal lord of the Owari Domain, and gained even more popularity during the Bunka and Bunsei eras. Eventually, the custom spread to lower-ranking samurai and townspeople, and by the end of the Edo period, drinking matcha had become a part of everyday family gatherings.
As a long-established tea purveyor in this tea-loving city, Myokoen has always strived to be Japan’s finest tea merchant. Since their founding, they have upheld the principle embodied in the four characters "茗茶潤心 (Meicha Junshin)", meaning “Good tea nourishes the heart.”
As taught in the philosophy of the tea ceremony, tea is a reflection of the heart. A single cup contains the personality and sincerity of the person who prepares it, sharing heartfelt hospitality in daily life.
Myokoen considers it their mission to communicate sincerity through the aroma, flavor, and color of tea. The constant question driving their innovation—“What can we do to delight our customers?”—stems from this very belief.
Blended Tea Born from Tradition
With a deep commitment to quality, Myokoen’s tea masters have traveled across Japan since 1916 to personally select the finest tea leaves.
Thanks to blending techniques cultivated over generations, each of their products is carefully crafted to deliver exceptional aroma, taste, and color.
They focus on creating unique flavor profiles by blending multiple varieties of tea leaves.
Rather than limiting themselves to tea from a single region, their tea masters taste and compare teas from all over Japan, selecting those that retain their flavor and aroma even when roasted at high temperatures.
By blending leaves from different regions and cultivars according to the conditions of each season, they craft a balanced and consistent taste. This approach sets them apart and defines the distinctive flavor that only Myokoen can offer.
A Familiar Fragrance in Nagoya's Underground
Motivated by their desire to honor tea’s natural aroma, Myokoen roasts hojicha fresh in-store using roasting machines at their locations throughout Aichi Prefecture.
At their directly managed stores, they place great importance on personal connections, welcoming each visitor with a complimentary cup of matcha, whisked fresh with a traditional tea whisk.
At Nagoya Station’s underground shopping area, the fragrance of Myokoen’s hojicha has become a local symbol.
They have operated stores in the underground malls of Nagoya Station and Sakae Station since those areas first opened.
The moment commuters exit the subway, the warm, nutty aroma of roasting hojicha greets them—a scent affectionately known by locals as the “smell of Nagoya,” often said to bring a feeling of returning home.
Moving forward, Myokoen will continue to deliver both sincerity and fragrance, enriching the everyday lives of those who love tea.
