Ingredients (for 1 serving)
・1 tsp ceremonial matcha powder (about 2g)
・2–3 oz (70 ml) hot water (170–175°F / 75–80°C)

Instructions

Prepare your whisk (chasen).
Soak it briefly in warm water to soften the bamboo bristles.

Sift the matcha.
Use a fine sifter to remove clumps and ensure a smooth, even texture.
Two scoops with a chasen, or a lightly rounded teaspoon (about 0.05 oz / 1.5 g).

Add water.
Pour hot (not boiling) water into the tea bowl.
For the water temperature:
In winter, pour boiling water into a cooling bowl once to let it cool (167–185°F / 75–85°C).
In summer, pour boiling water into a cooling bowl twice to let it cool (158–176°F / 70–80°C).

Whisk the matcha.
Using the chasen, whisk briskly in a zigzag “M” motion until a fine foam appears on top.

Once the foam has formed, lift the tip of the bamboo whisk to the surface and move it slowly to make the bubbles finer. Finally, gently lift the whisk so that the foam rises slightly in the center.

Finish and enjoy.
Lift the whisk gently at the end to create a delicate foam, then drink immediately while it’s fresh and aromatic.
